Mafrouka

Mafrouka 2023

The term Mafrouka comes from the technique of milling flour to be used in baked desserts. It refers to a large group of patterns that incorporate tilted, chiral repeat units, most commonly from the fourfold family.

This Mafrouka pattern is from the fountain floor of Bayt Al-Kritliyyah in Cairo. It is structured around an eight-pointed star called a khatam (meaning “seal”).
