Dimensions: 28" × 42" | 71.12 cm × 106.68 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on animal-free Fabriano archival paper
Year: 2025
Prints available

This piece explores the mathematical and symbolic meeting point between ninefold, tenfold, elevenfold, and twelvefold symmetries. The layout and colour palette invite the viewer to wander slowly through the pattern, engaging attentively with its structure. For experienced geometric analysts, the work also functions as a clear structural guide to the ruler-and-compass construction of the design.

Hammam Assammara

Hammam Assammara

Dimensions: 20" × 28" | 50.80 cm × 71.12 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on handmade Indian wasli paper
Year: 2024
Prints available

This architectural miniature memorialises an ancient bathhouse in Gaza City destroyed by Israeli airstrike in December 2023. The hammam’s interior is shown in both a fully materialised and a dematerialising state, reflecting the interiority of remembering a place that no longer physically exists. The destruction of heritage architecture constitutes cultural erasure; by keeping knowledge of these structures alive, this work aims to contribute to the preservation of Palestinian history.

Mirror Passage

Mirror Passage

Dimensions: 19" × 24" | 48.26 cm × 60.96 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on animal-free Fabriano archival paper
Year: 2024

This piece presents two distinct orientations of a sixfold pattern unit, positioned and combined to create new shapes. The pattern unit passes through a series of algorithmic transitions, designed and executed by hand. The arrangement has a mirrored relationship along the vertical axis.

Compass Rose

Compass Rose

Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on animal-free Fabriano archival paper
Year: 2023
Prints available

An eightfold pattern from a fountain floor in Cairo, this design incorporates two distinct eight-pointed stars. The interior star features a motif reminiscent of the compass rose used to indicate the cardinal directions in classical cartography. This motif, along with its containing star, is also commonly found in traditional quiltmaking designs across Europe and North America.

Qalawun

Qalawun

Dimensions: 12" × 13" | 30.48 cm × 33.02 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on handmade Indian wasli paper
Year: 2024

This composition celebrates a lesser known ceiling design from the Qalawun Mausoleum complex in Cairo, Egypt. It features multiple repeats of a tenfold star pattern from the Girih tiling system, cropped and adapted for the mausoleum ceiling in a distinctive and original manner. The colour scheme for this iteration evokes the original architectural inspiration.

Mafrouka

Mafrouka

Dimensions: 10" × 10" | 25.40 cm × 25.40 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on animal-free Fabriano archival paper
Year: 2023
Prints available

The term Mafrouka comes from the technique of milling flour for use in baked desserts. It refers to a large group of patterns that incorporate tiled, chiral repeats, most commonly from the fourfold family. This mafrouka pattern is from the fountain floor of Bayt Al Kritliyyah in Cairo, structured around an eight-pointed star called a khatam (meaning seal).

The Bird and the Hourglass

The Bird and the Hourglass

Dimensions: 10" × 16" | 25.40 cm × 40.64 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on animal-free Fabriano archival paper
Year: 2023

In this novel analysis of the tenfold star sequence from a fountain floor in Cairo, the pattern emerges from the grid with the proportions of the woven band built directly into its structure. This work continues an ongoing theme in my analyses of the Bayt Al Kritliyyah pattern series, exploring an underexamined yet fascinating geometric technique.

Isometric 15/12 Indigo and White

Dimensions: 11" × 14"  |  28 cm × 35.5 cm
Medium: Digital Print
Year: 2023

This digital print is created using the pencil and ink foundation for the work "Isometric 15/12" and digitally rendered in Indigo and White.

The Trefoil and The Crown

The Trefoil and The Crown

Dimensions: 10" × 16" | 25.40 cm × 40.64 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on animal-free Fabriano archival paper
Year: 2023
Prints available

In this analysis of the twelvefold star sequence from a fountain floor in Cairo, the pattern emerges from the grid with the proportions of the woven band built directly into its structure. This pattern is rare in that the interstitial stars are twelvefold instead of the usual interstitial pentagrams, leaving a trefoil (three-leaves) space in between, which suggests the development of a crown-shaped cap to the rosette.

The Shield and The Drum

The Shield and The Drum

Dimensions: 10" × 10" | 25.40 cm × 25.40 cm
Medium: Handmade watercolour paints on animal-free Fabriano archival paper
Year: 2023
Prints available

This analysis is based on a pattern from the central area of the fountain floor at Bayt Al Kritliyyah in Cairo. Building upon a geometric methodology pioneered by Alan Adams, the work develops his approach for these patterns, but notably incorporates the widths of the woven bands directly into the construction mathematics.

Cairo To Yazd

Cairo To Yazd

Dimensions: 39.76" × 24.02" | 101 cm × 61 cm
Medium: Watercolour on Fabriano archival paper under anti-glare UV preservation glass
Year: 2022

This work juxtaposes a Mamluk tenfold pattern with Yazd’s pili gereh motif, united by interstitial fivefold and “kite” polygons. Painted in watercolour from Ontario and Iran, it reveals deep mathematical symmetry.

Harmonic Rectangles

Harmonic Rectangles

Dimensions: 20.08" × 14.96" | 51 cm × 38 cm
Medium: Watercolour and white drafting pencil on indigo-dyed hemp paper under UV preservation glass
Year: 2022

Exploring harmonic rectangle derivation from circle divisions, this piece uses rich indigo hemp paper and precise pencil work. Each column demonstrates scaling rhythms inherent in polygon-based pattern constructions.
